Bright Beginnings
The purpose of YMCA Bright Beginnings is to outfit children with confidence and the tools they need to start the school year with success. Bright Beginnings has helped deserving children with needed school supplies and new clothes for 11 years. The YMCA of Greensboro plans to help more than 500 children this year who are referred to the Y association by local schools, churches, and social service agencies. The Y raises money and school supplies, then recruits volunteers and deserving children. You can help by becoming a donor or volunteer shopping buddy.
In August, volunteers and kids come to the Y, are matched as shopping buddies, and board the Y bus as a group to go shopping at Wal-Mart or Target. Together, kids and volunteer buddies select school clothes (outfits, shoes, socks, underwear, and jacket). The Y gives each child a book bag with school supplies. Although the experience is only about 3 hours, volunteers say it is one of the most rewarding.
Your gift of $150 fully outfits a child, and contributions of any amount are gratefully accepted. Shopping trips are scheduled for mid-August. Individuals and organizations may volunteer as shopping buddies, contribute funds, or donate school supplies or a new book bag by contacting their local YMCA.
If you would like to help, please click here for the YMCA volunteer form.
If you would like to donate or become a volunteer shopping buddy, contact your YMCA branch or nancy.calkins@ymcagreensboro.org for more information.
The YMCA would like to thank all our donors and volunteers who participated in the 2009 Bright Beginnings program. Without your help and support, we would not have been able to take more than 400 children shopping for school clothes and supplies. Thank you again!
